Your Child's First Visit

What to expect and how to prepare
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends scheduling your child's first dental appointment by their first birthday — or within six months after their first tooth appears, whichever comes first. The most important part of the first visit is simply getting to know and becoming comfortable with a doctor and their staff.

When to Schedule Your Child's First Appointment

Schedule within 6 months of the first tooth erupting — and no later than their first birthday. Early visits are low-key, non-invasive, and mostly educational. The sooner we start, the less intervention is typically needed down the line.

What Happens Step by Step

A Warm Welcome

Our front desk team greets you and your child by name. We give your little one time to explore the office, meet our team, and feel at home — before any examination begins. We never rush.

Health History Review

Your doctor reviews your child's medical and dental history, discussing feeding habits, sleep patterns, pacifier use, fluoride exposure, medications, and any concerns you have as a parent.

Gentle Oral Examination

Using a mirror and soft instruments, we examine teeth, gums, bite, jaw development, and oral tissues. For very young children, a knee-to-knee exam with a parent ensures maximum comfort for both of you.

Digital X-Rays (When Appropriate)

Our low-radiation digital X-rays are only taken when clinically appropriate — and always discussed with you first. For infants and toddlers, X-rays are rarely needed at the first visit.

Cleaning & Fluoride Treatment

A gentle cleaning removes any buildup, followed by a fluoride treatment to strengthen enamel. We use kid-friendly flavors to make this feel like a treat, not a treatment.

Parent Education & Q&A

We dedicate real time to answering every question you have — teething, brushing technique, diet, sippy cups, pacifiers, thumb-sucking, and more. You leave informed, confident, and ready.

What to expect and how to prepare
To make your first visit as smooth and efficient as possible, we encourage all new patients to complete their new patient forms before arriving. This allows us to spend more time focused on your child — and less time on paperwork at the front desk.

New Patient Registration

Your child's basic information, address, emergency contacts, and primary caregiver details. This form establishes your child as a patient of CPW Smile and ensures we have current contact information on file.

Can't complete forms ahead of time?

No problem — please arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment to allow time to complete paperwork at the front desk. Our team is happy to help with any questions.

Insurance & Payment

Transparent pricing and flexible payment options
We are a fee-for-service office. If you have dental insurance, we will gladly submit claims as a courtesy so that you can be reimbursed directly by your insurance provider. While you are ultimately responsible for your account, our staff will do their best to help you receive any benefits due.

How Insurance Works

  • We submit insurance claims on your behalf as a professional courtesy
  • Reimbursement goes directly to you from your insurance provider
  • You are responsible for your account balance regardless of insurance reimbursement
  • If your policy has not paid within 60 days, we encourage you to follow up with your insurer
  • Our team is happy to verify your benefits before your appointment — just call us

Payment Policy

When treatment is recommended for your child, we will provide a detailed treatment plan that includes all fees and explains the costs before care begins. Payment is due at the time of treatment. If you need special arrangements, please speak with our staff — we're happy to discuss options.

What to Do in a Dental Emergency

Dental emergencies can be stressful — especially with a young child in pain or distress. Here's a quick reference for the most common urgent situations. When in doubt, call us first. Our team can guide you over the phone and get your child seen as quickly as possible.

Toothache

Rinse with warm salt water. Do not place aspirin on the tooth or gums. Apply a cold compress to the cheek for swelling. Give age-appropriate children's pain reliever and call us as soon as possible.

Broken or Chipped Tooth

Rinse with warm water, apply gauze to control any bleeding, save any broken pieces, and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. Contact us immediately — prompt treatment reduces the risk of infection.

Knocked-Out Permanent Tooth

Hold by the crown, not the root. Rinse gently — do not scrub. Keep moist in milk or saline. Reinsert in socket if possible. See us within 30 minutes for the best chance of saving the tooth. Note: baby teeth should not be replanted.

Cut Lip, Tongue, or Cheek

Rinse gently with clean water. Apply gauze with firm pressure for 15–20 minutes to stop bleeding. Apply a cold compress outside the cheek. If bleeding doesn't stop after 20 minutes, contact our office or go to urgent care.
